ETHICS

ETHICS – EBRAINS-Italy Training, Human-AI Research, Innovation: Commons & Smartspace is a physical and virtual centre based at Via Tiburtina 605.

ETHICS is part of the Italian research infrastructure EBRAINS-Italy. ETHICS is a key contributor to the emerging Italian Node of EBRAINS, the European research infrastructure for brain-related research, ensuring its activities are embedded within broader national and European strategies. It is advised by ETICo, a Committee representing EBRAINS-Italy and tasked with maintaining cutting-edge, aligned educational and innovation activities.

Its core mission is to leverage the convergence of neuroscience, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and neurorobotics to drive scientific, innovation, and societal progress while ensuring all developments are aligned with human values.

Research on the brain and the mind investigates some of the most intriguing and complex known phenomena. It is also vital for achieving medical applications, countering the global rise of neurological and psychiatric conditions through earlier diagnosis, new treatments, and prevention. Technological innovations involve inspiring more sophisticated and efficient AI and robotics by understanding natural intelligence, while using advanced AI tools to accelerate brain research. Finally, it is important for fostering human well-being by designing better societies, technologies, and institutions that foster cognitive health, emotional resilience, personal development, and environmental stewardship.

True to its name, ETHICS champions contemporary humanism, centering its activities on people, safeguarding privacy, and preserving meaningful human control over AI. It views learning as a public good and promotes accountability, transparency, and the prevention of bias. The overarching goal of ETHICS is to foster excellence and expand knowledge to ultimately help create the conditions for each person to flourish.
